8/6/2023 0 Comments Unknown soldier![]() On June 20, 1942, the Ohio Past Presidents Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) erected a stone over the unknown soldiers grave. Today the area around the Riehle homestead is part of Pike Lake State Park. At the base of a large maple tree below the dam, a solitary headstone is a reminder of a life surrendered in Pike County during the Civil War. Riehle and some neighbors buried him at the foot of a large tree. A few days later, he became delirious with fever and died unknown. Wounded and unconscious when he was found, the Union soldier never revived to reveal his name, unit, or hometown. His body was never recovered.Ī few days after receiving the news of her husband’s drowning, Eliza Ann Riehle found a Union soldier collapsed in a field. ![]() ![]() A few days later, as the boat was nearing Jeffersonville, Indiana, Private Riehle attempted to pull a bucket of water from the river to wash when he fell overboard and drowned at the age of 41. On October 26, 1864, Riehle was traveling aboard a river steamer down the Ohio River. Singer-songwriter Ralph McTell has recorded a work of poetry and song to mark the centenary of the interment of the Unknown Soldier at Westminster Abbey. Anselum Riehle was drafted into the Union Army at Circleville, Ohio, on September 26, 1864. The Riehle family farmed the valley that is now Pike Lake State Park.
